Description


A federal governing system is divided into three basic levels of government with unique characteristics. These are the national, state and local.

This section defines and describes these levels of government.


Goals


- You should be able to define "federalism" and how it is different than unitary and confederated systems.
- You should understand the pros and cons of federal governing systems.
- You should have firm understanding of the unique nature of what nations, states and local governments are.
- Know the conflict regarding what relationship should exist between the national and states governments in the early years of the republic.
- Be familiar with the process by which the nation developed and how states evolved.
- Be able to describe manifest destiny and the gradual process by which it occurred.
